Inflammatory myopathy (dermatomyositis-polymyositis) is an idiopathic disease characterized by progressive symmetrical, proximal muscle weakness. Recently, there has been an increased awareness of the association of a malignant tumor with this disorder. The relationship between inflammatory myopathies and presence of a malignant tumor still remains obscure. We experienced a case of an inflammatory myopathy in a patient with stage II breast cancer in remission. The patient was admitted to our hospital in May 2005 with a two months history of dysphagia and peripheral weakness. The patient underwent breast conserving surgery in 2000, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The patient remains well without any evidence of recurrence or other cancers after the evaluation. We report here a case of inflammatory myopathy that developed in a patient with breast cancer with a curative resection and adjuvant therapy, with a brief review of literature.
